The German Rig,
by Damian Wheway
- Take your chosen link material for your German rig. In this demo we are using the Manta coated braid from Katran’s exceptional hooklink range.

2. Many hook patterns are suitable for this rig. Here we are using one of the all round favourites, the TWG from the Deception Angling range.

3. Take around 12 inches of coated braid and pass an inch or so through the inside of the hook eye to start a knotless knot.

4. Pinch the tag end against the hook shaft and whip the remaining hooklink back from the eye 5 or 6 times.

5. Next pass the link through the back of the hook eye to complete the knot.

6. Trim off the tag end with some braid scissors.

7. Next, using a lighter, burn down the remaining few millimetres to form a ‘blob’ ensuring not to get too close to the knot. This keeps the rig tidy and aids in keeping the knot secure.

8. Take a Deception Angling anti-tangle sleeve. Colours in the range vary but we tend to use a close matching colour to the hooklink to help keep the rig concealed.

9. Pass the free end of the rig through the narrow end of the anti-tangle sleeve.

10. At this point you can adjust the length of your rig depending on what you need. Then close the rig by tying a ‘figure of 8 loop knot’.

11. Using a knot puller, pull and tighten the knot down making the knot as secure as possible.

12. Once again, trim and ‘blob’ the tag end for additional security.

13. Next slide up the anti-tangle sleeve over the knot to eliminate any snagging or tangles when casting.

14. Going back to the hook end, take a Deception Angling shank bead and a micro ring swivel for attaching your chosen bait to the hook.

15. First slide on the micro ring swivel using the large loop.

16. Then push on the shank bead being careful of the hook point. You’ll want the shank bead to sit roughly opposite the hook barb. This will give the hookbait room to move and maximise hooking potential.

17. Using a coated braid stripper, strip back around 5mm of the coating roughly an inch or so above the hook eye.

18. Take your chosen colour of Deception Angling Tungsten putty, we’ve chosen brown for this demo however green and grey are also available.

19. Pinch off a small amount of putty. We recommend about half a ‘pea size’ or the size of a BB.
20. Attach the putty to the stripped section of braid.
Note: adding putty to the German rig is optional. We’ve found in our experience, the stripped section and added putty greatly improves hook movement and hooking potential.
21. To attach the bait start by passing a 6 to 8 inch piece of bait floss through the small end loop of the micro ring swivel.
22. Using a baiting needle, pull both ends of the bait floss through your chosen hookbait and pull the bait down to the barrel of the swivel.
23. Trim the tag end then use a lighter to blob the bait floss, securing your bait.
24. Your hookbait should look like this, however any bottom bait can be used for the German rig, wafters are also suitable.
25. Your German rig is complete.
